Hall of Sonata: A Harmonious Blend of Geometric Elements

Geometric elements take center stage in the Hall of Sonata. Movable sliding doors are employed in the public area and study room, allowing for flexible space definition and enhanced user adaptability. The abundant natural light flowing into the space ensures that the connecting walls to the private areas do not feel constricting, while the monochrome paint colors converge the spatial tone. The clever use of curved elements throughout the design creates dynamic and seamless transitions, adding a touch of elegance to the open space.

The realization of the Hall of Sonata is a testament to the designer's mastery of materials and technology. The combination of iron, wood, water-based paint, grayscale colors, pure white, glass, and geometric and curvy surfaces highlights the interplay between different materials. Translucent elements such as glass, screens, and reflective mirrors are strategically incorporated to enhance transparency and extend the space.

Despite its spaciousness, the Hall of Sonata faced a challenge at the entrance, where the beam height felt oppressive. To address this, the design team ingeniously modified the beam using a curvy arc design. The curved surface characteristics of the arc were also extended to other elements in the space, including carpets, screens, clocks, chandeliers, and even curved cylinders. This harmonious integration of different materials and colors ensures consistency and coherence throughout each area.

The Hall of Sonata is characterized by its arc vocabulary, warm wood elements, earthy colors, simple color palette, soft decorations, and its commitment to a formaldehyde removal project. The design team, led by Hsieh-Ying Chen, has created a space that encourages interaction among family members. Multiple screens can be flexibly adjusted to divide the overall space, while the use of glass, reflective surfaces, and other elements expands the perceived boundaries of the space.

This remarkable design project was completed in October 2020 in Kaohsiung City, Taiwan. The design team conducted extensive research to ensure that the layout and movable configurations maximized the space advantage and met the specific needs of the client. The strategic use of permeable natural light and penetrating materials allows for a seamless integration of light and space. Additionally, ample storage cabinets were incorporated throughout the public and private areas to cater to the client's storage needs.

The Hall of Sonata is a testament to the designer's ability to overcome creative, technical, and research challenges. Despite the spacious site, the design team carefully considered the layout division to achieve the best spatial experience. The use of open screen sliding doors and the incorporation of curvy dynamic surfaces effectively divide the areas and camouflage the beam in the public space.

This design project capitalizes on the advantage of corner windows, harnessing the abundance of natural daylight. Window screens allow warm light to spill into the house, creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere. In the private area, an introverted space resembling a "daze pavilion" provides a tranquil retreat, reminiscent of a hotel-like ambiance. This thoughtful design allows residents to find solace and relaxation upon returning home.

The Hall of Sonata has been recognized for its excellence and creativity, receiving the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2021. This prestigious award acknowledges designs that demonstrate resourcefulness, technical prowess, and a commitment to improving quality of life. The Hall of Sonata truly embodies these qualities, making it a standout design in the industry.
